The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private John Thomas (ASN: 3105811), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 316th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Nantillois, France, 28 September 1918. Under terrific enemy fire Private Thomas advanced alone to the enemy lines and silenced an enemy machine gun driving the enemy crew to flight. His bravery and devotion to duty enabled the Infantry to resume the advance against the enemy forces with a minimum of losses. His conduct greatly inspired the men with whom he served.
