The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Antonio J. Tavano (ASN: 1273012), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 111th Machine-Gun Battalion, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 11 October 1918. Sergeant Tavano voluntarily left his cover during a heavy bombardment and brought a wounded officer to a place of safety after the Utter bearers were killed. He gave all the assistance possible to these wounded men before they died.
