    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Thomas Joseph Sweeney (ASN: 89001), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Landres-et-St. Georges, France, 15 October 1918. Sergeant Sweeney courageously supervised the carrying of the wounded, his duties exposing him at all times to the continuous fire of the enemy. By his valor and strict devotion to duty, all the wounded were safely evacuated.
