The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Patrick Sweeney (ASN: 3282812), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 322d Infantry Regiment, 81st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Abaucourt, France, 9 November 1918. Private Sweeney voluntarily advanced through intense artillery and machine-gun fire into the ruins of Abaucourt to locate an enemy machine-gun nest. He was killed by shell fire after having reached a position in the enemy’s trenches.
