The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Milton Carl Sundin (ASN: 2202754), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 353d Infantry Regiment, 89th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the St. Mihiel salient, France, September 12 – 13, 1918. Private Sundin, while advancing through wooded territory with four other men, was surprised by the fire of six machine-guns. Though two of the party were wounded, Private Sundin, with great daring, worked around the flank of the position and succeeded in routing the enemy machine-gunners in time to permit the advance without casualties of two platoons operating near by.
