The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Q. Sullivan, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chevieres, France, 14 October 1918. After this company commander had been seriously wounded and he himself wounded in the head by a machine-gun bullet, Lieutenant Sullivan continued to lead and encourage his men until wounded the second time. He then continued in command of the company until ordered to be evacuated by his battalion commander.
