The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private Luch Stifnell (ASN: 1250625), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery C, 107th Field Artillery, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Peterghem, Belgium, 31 October 1918. Mortally wounded, yet realizing the need of every effective at the piece to continue its operation, Private Stifenell refused help from his comrades, and while lying on the ground, cheered the members of the gun crew and urged them to maintain their fire, until he was removed to a dressing station by a stretcher bearer.
