    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal David B. Stewart, Jr. (ASN: 57297), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on Hill 240, near Exermont, France, 5 October 1918. Corporal Stewart exposed himself to heavy fire to advance 100 yards in advance of his company in order to locate enemy machine-gun positions. Coming suddenly upon an enemy machine-gun nest, he forced twelve of the enemy to surrender and then continued his reconnaissance.
