The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Levi Stevens, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 125th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 9 October 1918. Commanding a small detachment, First Lieutenant Stevens charged and captured a strong enemy machine-gun nest, his personal activity and courage aiding greatly in the success of the exploit. Although wounded and under heavy fire, he organized a position from which his detachment could effectively turn the captured gun on the enemy.
