The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class George Benjamin Statham (ASN: 41442), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Machine-Gun Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Tuilerie Farm, France, 4 November 1918. Although he was the only remaining member of his gun crew, Private Statham courageously operated his gun until he had put one enemy machine-gun nest out of action. He continued with his heroic work until he was killed.
