The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Herman Edward Stadie, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Feme-des-Dames, west of Fismes, France, 20 August 1918. While the vicinity of the regimental command post where he was stationed was under heavy bombardment, Captain Stadie, without thought of personal danger, voluntarily ran outside, through shrapnel and high-explosive shells, and rescued a wounded runner.
