The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Medical Corps) Ela Filo Srygley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 4th Machine-Gun Battalion (Attached), 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Medeah Ferme, France, October 8 – 9, 1918. When a platoon was being heavily gassed and under intense artillery and machine-gun fire, Lieutenant Srygley voluntarily left the shelter of his dressing station, proceeded to the line, and rendered invaluable aid to the wounded. On 9 October Lieutenant Srygley again left the shelter of his dressing station and under intense fire, voluntarily went to the assistance of the wounded of the 141st Infantry.
