After his war service, Chandler Sprague was a Baltimore and then Los Angeles reporter and Hollywood script writer. He also worked for United Artists, Paramount and MGM Studios and wrote 14 screenplays, and was nominated for an Oscar for his work on “A Guy Named Joe” in 1943.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Chandler Sprague, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Balschwiller, Alsace, 31 August 1918. Upon returning from a raid which he led against enemy trenches, Lieutenant Sprague found one of his men was missing. Accompanied by one man, he promptly and voluntarily returned through artillery, machine-gun, and rifle fire, found the missing man, who had been wounded and carried him back to the American lines.
