The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal Carl George Somnitz (ASN: 1387579), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 131st Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Chipilly Ridge, France, 9 August 1918. When all the runners of his platoon had failed to establish liaison with the platoon on the left Corporal Somnitz succeeded in getting through with a message. On his return trip he was twice wounded, but dragged himself along the ground and delivered his message before lapsing into unconsciousness.
