The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Wallace W. Smith (ASN: 2294204), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Gesnes, France, September 28 to 1 October 1918. Although twice wounded, he stayed out in front under heavy machine-gun and artillery fire and helped to take back within our lines wounded comrades who otherwise would have fallen into the hands of the enemy.
