The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Sidney Smith (ASN: 3129935), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company H, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, October 2 – 8, 1918. When his company had been cut off from communication he, though seriously wounded, refused to seek shelter. He participated in several attacks with courage and aggressiveness, using his rifle very effectively and encouraging his comrades. When relief came he walked back to the dressing station, so that medical attention could first be given to the more seriously wounded.
