The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Samuel Theodore Smith, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Battery A, 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fleville, France, 4 October 1918. When his platoon had been caught in an enemy barrage and all the cannoneers except two had been killed, he made repeated trips into the shelled area to remove the wounded to a place of safety. He refused any treatment for four wounds which he had received until all his men had received medical treatment.
