    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class Philip Frederick Smith (ASN: 1284100), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 13 October 1918. During a heavy artillery barrage on the night of 13 October two men having been killed next to him and one severely wounded, Private Smith, disregarding his personal safety, carried the wounded man through the barrage to the company headquarters; knocked down by a shell splinter and severely bruised, be continued with the wounded man to first-aid station.
