The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant Martin E. Smith (ASN: 1390962), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Consenvoye, France, 9 October 1918. When his company was held up by heavy machine-gun fire, First Sergeant Smith showed marked personal bravery in working his way to the rear of the enemy emplacement. He opened fire upon the enemy, from the rear, who then surrendered to him. He returned to his own lines with two officers and 15 men as prisoners.
