The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Eben A. Smith (ASN: 547459), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Crezancy, France, 16 July 1918. Although knocked down by the explosion of a shell, Sergeant Smith immediately got up and rendered valuable assistance to his platoon leader in conducting the movement of the platoon through the most intense shell fire. He was subsequently killed in action.
