The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Dalton Everett Smith (ASN: 1319720), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company B, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mazinghein, France, 19 October 1918. Acting as a scout, Private Smith fearlessly advanced ahead of his company under heavy fire, and sent back all obtainable information to the company commander. While standing erect in the open and directing effective rifle fire at the retreating enemy, he was seriously wounded.
