The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Oscar Trygve Slagsvol, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 128th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Gilles, France, 3 August 1918. Commanding the battalion patrols, Lieutenant Slagsvol was engaged continuously throughout the day in making reconnaissances under heavy fire. Although wounded, he preceded the battalion into the enemy’s position and continued to perform his duties until he was overcome by exhaustion.
