The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Henry Sprague Silver, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 11 October 1918. Lieutenant Silver led a patrol into the woods under a severe artillery and machine-gun fire to establish liaison with the units on the left flank. He continued on his mission after three-fourths of his patrol had been killed or wounded and succeeded in bringing valuable information to his battalion commander.
