The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Private First Class John W. Shumate (ASN: 52189), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 23d Infantry Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Chateau-Thierry, France, 6 June 1918. After his platoon had been withdrawn Private First Class Shumate continued forward to his objective and remained throughout the night under heavy fire in the hope of keeping the ground gained until reinforcements came up, and was later killed in action on June 14.
