By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Private Daniel C. Shroy (ASN: 1193798), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Headquarters Company 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, throughout the early morning hours of 15 July 1918, near Courboin, France, Private Shroy continued the carrying of messages to the 2d Battalion. The area between Courboin and the 2d Battalion was heavily gassed and shelled and despite the fact that Private Shroy was gassed about one P.M. on 15 July, he continued at his duties and delivered two more messages without thought of self. He was later forced to give up and was sent to a relief station. On one occasion Private Shroy volunteered to carry a message when told that it was practically impossible. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]
