The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Gilbert D. Short (ASN: 1314510), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux-Andigny, France, 19 October 1918. When the position of his company had become untenable because of enemy machine-gun and artillery fire, Private Short, with another soldier, the sole survivors of a Lewis machine-gun team, covered the retreat of their company. Clinging to their advanced post throughout the day, they took up the advance with the company at dusk that evening.
