    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private First Class George Jenks Shively (ASN: 9141), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Section No. 585, Ambulance Service, American Expeditionary Forces, during the fighting near Soissons, France, 21 July 1918. Private First Class Shively drove his ambulance through shell fire and continued on after his car was badly shattered until he had delivered his patients to a dressing station, when he fainted from serious wounds in his left arm and both legs, existence of which he had denied when the ambulance was hit.
