The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Marion F. Shepherd, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 371st Infantry Regiment, 93d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ripont, France, September 29 – 30, 1918. Captain Shepherd was wounded twice but each time he refused to be evacuated after receiving first-aid treatment, holding his shattered command in position under heavy shell fire for six days.
