The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Andrew Almon Shaw (ASN: 73108), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Givry, France, 20 July 1918. Private Shaw, on his own initiative, led a group of seven men under a severe rifle and machine-gun fire through a gap in the enemy’s wire in an effort to silence a hostile machine-gun which had been taking heavy toll of his comrades. Six of the seven men in his party having been killed or wounded, he continued to advance, killing or wounding the crew and putting the gun out of action. His splendid courage and leadership were an inspiration to his comrades.
