The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Edward Thomas Shanahan (ASN: 91142), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 165th Infantry Regiment, 42d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in the face of violent artillery and machine-gun fire near Sergy and Seringes, France, on 28 July 1918. Sergeant Shanahan selected a squad of men and rushed a machine-gun that had been harassing his company with its fire. He reached and captured the gun and killed the crew.
