War Department, General Orders No. 128 (1918)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Bart Lee Shadrick (ASN: 2218529), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company E, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Fey-en-Haye, France, 12 September 1918. When a part of his company was held up by machine-gun fire Private Shadrick, with the aid of two others, flanked two machine-guns, killed the gunners, and captured the guns, thereby allowing the company to advance without delay or losses. Later on in the same advance he crept up to a German machine-gun emplacement, rolled over the parapet onto the gun crew, putting gun and gunners out of action.
