The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Victor L. Seagraves (ASN: 1455903), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Scout Platoon, 1st Battalion, 139th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Baulny, France, 28 September 1918. Sergeant Seagraves voluntarily formed and led a patrol against an enemy machine-gun nest, which was causing many casualties in his battalion, and captured one of the guns. With utter disregard for his personal safety he advanced alone on another gun of the nest but was severely wounded by the intense fire, in the performance of this heroic act.
