The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) James Albert Schwing, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 118th Infantry Regiment, 30th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montbrehain, France, 8 October 1918. With two soldiers First Lieutenant Schwing attacked a machine-gun nest of four guns and about 40 Germans. By the efficient use of grenades and automatic rifles the Germans were forced to surrender, thereby allowing the company to continue the advance.
