The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant John W. Saxon (ASN: 1286013), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Verdun, France, 10 October 1918. In the advance on Recherne Hill Sergeant Saxon showed great courage and judgment in leading his platoon and wiping out several machine guns that were holding up the advance. He was killed while gallantly leading his platoon against the last of these.
