The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Ernest Sherwood Savage, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 316th Machine-Gun Battalion, 81st Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Grimaucourt, France, 11 November 1918. Although so sick from gas that he could hardly move and vomiting heavily into his gas mask, Lieutenant Savage successfully conducted the fire of his machine-gun platoon in the face of heavy shrapnel, gas, and machine-gun fire. He received no medical attention until late in the afternoon after the attack was over.
