The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Joseph Sauer (ASN: 1708815), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Binarville, France, 2 October 1918. Corporal Sauer volunteered, in the face of heavy enemy machine-gun fire, to deliver a message to a platoon sergeant who was leading an attack on enemy machine-gun nests. He was wounded in one leg just as he started and was wounded in the other leg before reaching the sergeant, but did, by calling aloud, deliver the message verbally and accurately.
