The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal William N. Sattler (ASN: 1389862), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Headquarters Company, 132d Infantry Regiment, 33d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, at Bois-de-Foret, France, October 6 – 13, 1918. Corporal Sattler was in charge of all runners at advance post of command of the regiment. The area was heavily gassed. Although so badly gassed that his eyes were swollen shut and his voice affected, he refused to be evacuated, but continued on duty.
