Sartain (ASN: 547762), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the World War I Victory Medals awarded him. While serving with Company K, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, Corporal Sartain displayed exceptional bravery near Jaulgonne, France, 26 July 1918, where, under heavy enemy fire he left a place of safety and carried three wounded soldiers to a dressing station. [A Distinguished Service Cross was awarded for this action.]

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Corporal George William Sartain (ASN: 547762), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Jaulgonne, France, 26 July 1918. Corporal Sartain gave aid to three wounded comrades during a heavy bombardment and after four unsuccessful attempts, finally succeeded in carrying them to a dressing station.
