While serving with Company F, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, on 26 July 1918, near Jaulgonne, France, Sergeant Sanders showed exceptional bravery and leadership while his company was advancing up a ravine swept with machine gun fire and pushed his platoon forward until he was ordered to stop.
