The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Gail Hamilton Sager (ASN: 1214099), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company D, 108th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Ronssoy, France, 29 September 1918. Upon being wounded in the hand, Corporal Sager bandaged the wound himself and immediately returned to the firing line. He then picked up an automatic rifle, and, advancing alone toward machine-gun nests which were holding up his company, was killed after proceeding only a short distance.
