The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Sergeant William Frank Sack (ASN: 280641), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company I, 126th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Romagne, France, 9 October 1918. Assuming command of his company after all the officers had become casualties, Sergeant Sack skillfully maneuvered it in an attack on enemy machine-gun nests, which were hindering the advance. He was severely wounded early in the engagement, but he continued to lead and encourage his men until he received a second wound, which rendered him a cripple for life.
