The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Captain (Medical Corps) Herbert Dickens Ryman, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 107th Field Artillery (Attached), 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Gilles, France, 17 August 1918. While administering first aid to a wounded soldier, Captain Ryman was himself mortally wounded. Refusing aid, he assisted in rendering and directing the treatment of three other soldiers. Though weakened by loss of blood, he showed utter disregard for his personal danger, refusing to accept treatment until the other wounded had been cared for.
