The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Sergeant Louis Carl Rupholdt (ASN: 551128), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company G, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Mezy, France, 15 July 1918. Sergeant Rupholdt held his post on the back of the Marne until nearly his entire platoon had been annihilated and he himself wounded. After being carried a short distance to the rear he continued to direct the defense of the position until killed.
