The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Henry Frank Ruland (ASN: 2240721), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 357th Ambulance Company, 315th Sanitary Train, 90th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vilcey-sur-Trey, France, 12 September 1918. With another soldier, Private Ruland left the shelter of a wood and went forward to rescue a soldier who had fallen wounded on a hill under constant machine-gun and shell fire. While they were carrying him back on a litter he was again wounded and the litter was struck twice by machine-gun bullets, but they succeeded in carrying him back to safety, thereby saving his life.
