The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Corps of Engineers) Albert Chatfield Rubel, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 304th Engineers, 79th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Montfaucon, France, 26 September 1918. While reconnoitering to locate the Avocourt-Malancourt Road Captain Rubel was held up by an enemy machine-gun on the parapet of a trench running parallel to the road. He proceeded ahead of two men of his platoon and personally disposed of two German gunners.
