The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Charles C. Rossire, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 319th Infantry Regiment, 80th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Imecourt, France, 1 November 1918. His company being halted by enemy machine-gun fire, Captain Rossire secured two hand grenades and rushed alone for an enemy machine-gun nest, throwing his grenades and compelling the surrender of the gun crews. Returning to his company, he directed the fire upon the remaining machine-gun crews, which were causing heavy casualties in his company, silenced the enemy guns, and resumed the advance with minimum losses. The soldierly courage displayed by Captain Rossire greatly inspired the members of his company.
