The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Douglass R. Ross (ASN: 61925), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company K, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Vaux, France, 16 July 1918. Private Ross killed two of the enemy who were attempting to establish a machine-gun position in a railroad station and captured their machine-guns. Later, the same day, when snipers were working in a ravine near the American line, he, with two other soldiers, went forward to drive them back. One of his comrades was killed, but he, with great daring, attacked the Germans, killing one and wounding another.
