The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Verne Ernest Rogers, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 104th Infantry Regiment, 26th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Avillers, France, 13 September 1918. When a section of his platoon was being held up by machine-gun fire, Lieutenant Rogers directed an attack on the nest, while he and a corporal attacked from the opposite side, driving out and capturing three of the enemy.
