The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Private Patrick Rochford (ASN: 1710149), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company L, 308th Infantry Regiment, 77th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, west of St. Juvin, France, 16 October 1918. Private Rochford, with another soldier, volunteered to cross a level open space for 600 yards swept by converging machine-gun fire to deliver a message to the front line, undeterred by the knowledge that sis other soldiers had been wounded in a similar attempt. Crawling from one shell hole to another, he succeeded in reaching the front line and delivering the message.
