The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Leo Deveaux Roberts (ASN: 559000), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company A, 11th Machine-Gun Battalion, 4th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Nantillois, France, 12 October 1918. After the infantry had fallen back 200 meters under heavy fire, Sergeant Roberts stayed at his one remaining machine gun and operated it until the infantry had re-established its position, capturing a German machine gun and three prisoners.
